Broken Skeg
- Replacement Skegs are made to replace skegs on outboard and Inboard/Outboard drive units that have been broken off or damaged so full protection of the prop can be maintained during boating.
- Skeg Replacements cost only a fraction of the entire gear case replacement and are shaped to within 1/2″ of the torpedo section of the housing. This allows room to grind and fit the replacement skeg to the original, without warpage to the housing if proper welding techniques are used.
- A measurement to determine proper skeg replacement needed, is taken 1/2″ below the torpedo section of the gear housing.
Skeg Protection
A boat’s motor skeg is an essential part of the propulsion system. It is a thin, vertical fin located on the bottom of the outboard motor, which helps in steering the boat. The skeg is vulnerable to damage from rocks, sand, and other underwater obstacles. A damaged skeg can cause steering problems, reduce fuel efficiency and even lead to more significant damage to the motor. It is, therefore, essential to protect the skeg from damage.
Skeg Protection Tips
Here are some tips to protect your boat motor skeg:
1. Avoid Shallow Waters
Shallow waters are a significant cause of skeg damage. Always check water depth before venturing into unknown areas. If you are going to areas with shallow waters, it is advisable to tilt the motor up, so the skeg is not in contact with the bottom.
2. Install a skeg guard
A skeg guard is an aftermarket protection device that attaches to the lower unit of the outboard motor. It acts as a shield for the skeg, protecting it from rocks and other underwater obstacles. A skeg guard is a great investment as it protects the skeg from damage and prolongs its life.
3. Use an anti-cavitation plate
An anti-cavitation plate is another protection device that can be installed on the outboard motor. It is located above the skeg and reduces the drag caused by turbulence. It also protects the skeg from damage by lifting the motor higher off the water.
Skeg Replacement
If your skeg is already damaged, it is essential to have it replaced. A damaged skeg can cause steering problems, reduce fuel efficiency and even lead to more significant damage to the motor. Skeg replacement is a relatively simple process that can be done by a professional or DIY.
